The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you would expect from a refrigerator within this price range. This includes Wi-Fi as well as app support, and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and offers a ton of customization options. Inside, the refrigerator has an ordinary French-door design with gallon-sized door bins at each door and two rows of shelves that capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right side can be folded to provide more space for taller items. You'll also find a full-width drawer for deli and an inside water dispenser.
One of the best aspects of this refrigerator is that the ice maker is inside the freezer, making it easy to move ice into the fridge to be used when it is needed. The freezer has thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers that can help you better organize the position of items. It also has a large bin that holds plenty of frozen food items and an ice storage bin.
Another great feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's a simple method to monitor your fridge and manage it, especially when not at home.
The Smart InstaView feature is neat, but it doesn't necessarily enhance the performance of the fridge. The fridge took a bit longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we test. This is likely due to the larger capacity.
Another issue with this refrigerator is its doors. The handles with a sunken design allow smaller people to open them from the bottom. However taller people have a difficult time closing them without slamming them. It would have been more effective if these had front-mounted handles.
The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is an excellent choice for those looking to combine the look and feel of a French-door refrigerator with a more efficient design. Its capacity is superior for a counter-depth model, and it cools well and has a nice layout. It's also a bit cheaper than the best counter depth refrigerator that comes with an icemaker, which makes it an attractive option.
Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator
If you're looking for an French door fridge that doesn't cost you a fortune this Frigidaire is a great choice. It's a simple fridge which may not be as eye-catching as some of its competitors, but it still has enough features to make it a suitable option. Its main feature is the adjustable temperature drawer, which helps keep foods such as meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water and ice maker dispenser.
The "Chill Drawer", which is located above the two crisper bins, is a nice feature. This drawer lets you redirect part of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, which means you can put away food items that require extra attention. You can adjust this feature using an adjustable slider that is located just in the middle of the drawer. It is also possible to use this to set a general cooling setting for the entire fridge though I've found that adjusting the generic settings tends to have a better effect than specific ones.
In my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different parts of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary significantly from 38 degrees. This is a great performance however it doesn't make it into the top ten in our ratings.
This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also combine this fridge with an intelligent thermometer to get more precise readings of your fridge's internal temperature.
